Stroud, Gates to host pro-am to benefit Harvey relief

Houston-area professionals Chris Stroud and Bobby Gates have teamed with the Houston Golf Association to create a pro-am designed to raise funds for flood victims affected by Hurricane Harvey.Stroud earned his first career victory earlier this year at the Barracuda Championship, and he spoke to reporters at the Safeway Open to announce the event, which will be held Dec. 11-12 at the Tiger Woods-designed Bluejack National in Montgomery, Tex., about an hour outside Houston."As a longtime Houstonian, I was compelled to call on the professional golf community to help our neighbors rebuild their lives after Hurricane Harvey," Stroud said in a release. "With the help of professional golfers from across the country, we will pool our resources and assist those in need over the coming months."The pro-am will include up to 20 professionals from the PGA Tour, PGA Tour Champions and LPGA playing alongside amateurs and corporate partners. Other player commitments include Ben Crane, Ryan Palmer, Gerina Piller and Martin Piller. The event will also include a pro-am fundraiser, with Patrick Reed, Jimmy Walker and Stacy Lewis among those "committed to participate." The stated goal is to raise $1 million for victims of the storm that ravaged the Houston area with unprecedented levels of flooding in late August.

On the flip side, Tiger was 24 when he won this event for the only time in 2000, so Spieth has 1-up on him there. Of course, Woods turned around four months later and won at Pebble Beach for the second time that year (this time the U.S. Open). Spieth will have to wait until 2019 until he can attempt to duplicate that feat.
