Fleetwood birdies 18 to grab second at WGC Mexico

MEXICO CITY Tommy Fleetwood began the final round at the WGC-Mexico Championship tied for seventh place and four strokes off the lead which considering the quality of players between himself and the lead probably shouldnt have been considered a golden opportunity. But after a slow start on the opening nine, the Englishman found himself right in the hunt with birdies at Nos. 11, 12 and 15. On the 18th green, Fleetwood was two strokes behind front-runner Dustin Johnson when he made a 38-footer for birdie to cut the lead to one.

Things became even more interesting when Johnson found a fairway bunker at the 18th hole, but the world No. 1 hit his approach to 18 feet for a two-putt par and the victory. If I'm honest, I was kind of looking at trying to get third on my own at one stage, and then before you know it I saw the scores on the last green and I thought I might have a chance at winning now, said Fleetwood, who finished alone in second place after a closing 66. It would have been nice to get in a playoff and see how we did, but no, it was a good day.Fleetwood has played some of his best golf this season, winning the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship on the European Tour in January before his runner-up showing in Mexico.
