AUGUSTA, Ga. Condoleezza Rices first reaction to the Augusta National Womens Amateur Championship was one of excitement. Not for me, although Im excited, the former Secretary of State said after the historic announcement on Wednesday at the first news conference conducted by chairman Fred Ridley.Speaking as a university professor that knows the intercollegiate game through her relationship with the teams at Stanford University, Rice said, I could just see their faces and the excitement of coming [to Augusta National].

In 2012, Rice was invited to become one of Augusta Nationals first women members. Speaking to the many changes that have taken place since then, Rice was best equipped to provide perspective on the social changes at the venerable club over the past six years.Ive said many times that our country is a story of our great institutions evolving and becoming more inclusive over time, Rice said. This is one of the great institutions, not just American institutions, but international institutions, so its evolved and its become more inclusive and thats very exciting.

"One of the reasons that a lot of us Mid-Ams like to play here so much is it's fun to see how our games stack up against the pros," O'Connell said. "This week has been a combination of trying to take it all in, enjoy it and of course I would like to perform well."

It's not unusual at all for golf clubs not to allow women, its a historical thing that has nothing to do with Augusta other than Augusta was one of the MANY clubs and perhaps one of the slowest to rectify. Muirfield in Scotland had the same issue a year or two ago where there wouldn't even allow female members.
On Masters Eve, Mid-Am champ O'Connell ready to go
There is zero chance he would pass up a chance to play Augusta, the viewership and what it would do for the LPGA would be insane. Throw in the societal pressure for equal opportunity for women, maybe we see someone start a social media campaign with something like #AugustaforAll, and you'd have the Augusta membership in a tough spot.

This is the fact. The U.S. Amateur was very highly regarded. The shift to professional majors didn't happen until about the time Tiger came on the scene and I don't think it had anything to do with Tiger as such, but IMHO with maybe some lessening of its stature (not saying there should have been), but who knows.
Augusta National Women's Amateur Championship coming next
The old Augusta was a tightrope, where risks were encouraged but a fall could hurt. "You always felt at Augusta you could take a chance on something, whether it was a tee ball or a second shot," Crenshaw says. "You had more room to play, and more people could play dangerously. It was totally different from any challenge in the world."
